Dean Smith was left to rue Leicester City’s dismal defending following their 3-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool with Curtis Jones scoring a ‘really good goal’ at the King Power Stadium.
Two years to the day since beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley, the difference in atmosphere – and the difference in performance – could hardly have been more stark
The Foxes were booed off at half-time, and you could hardly blame the home support for voicing their fury. Not for the first time, Leicester City’s collapsed in the face of even the slightest hint of pressure; 0-0 becoming 0-2 in the space of just three minutes, the revitalised Curtis Jones following up a smart back-post finish with a wonderful swivel and volley mere moments later.
And Smith, who has won only one out of six games since replacing Brendan Rodgers on an interim basis, was devastated to see a defence consisting of two Belgium internationals and a three-time Premier League champion opened up so easily.
Liverpool thrash Leicester City with Curtis Jones on fire
“Goals change games. I could throw their goalkeeper 50 balls now and they wouldn’t score from one of his big kicks over our back four, who were in place. A really disappointing goal to give away,” Smith tells the Mercury, Leicester’s resistance broken by a simple Alisson Becker goal-kick.
“Then Wilf (Ndidi) has tried to read a pass, and they turn and play it into Jones who turns and scores a really good goal. Both goals marginally onside. VAR didn’t seem to go for us.
“Our minds then get frazzled. Then, for whatever reason, we could have conceded a third from kick-off! We needed to get in at half-time without any further pain.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s wonderful free-kick secured the win late on; Liverpool ensuring that their Champions league charge will go to the wire. Leicester, meanwhile, are now two points from safety with two games remaining.
“We’re all supporters in here,” Smith adds. “We all support football clubs, and you want to see your football club winning. We got beat tonight by a team who physically overran us when they got the two-goal lead.
“They’re a physically strong team, supreme athletes and really good players. I certainly understand, that if you’re losing 3-0 at home and you’re fighting a relegation battle, I understand why fans will react in certain ways.”
