Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are reportedly leading Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Leicester City playmaker James Maddison.
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing James Maddison from Leicester City in the summer transfer window.
Spurs are long-term admirers of the playmaker, according to the report, which has added that Leicester are willing to sell the England international this summer.
The Foxes will play in the Championship next season after getting relegated from the Premier League.
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are “currently leading Tottenham – who have reportedly made contact in regard to signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat – in the race” for Maddison, described as “a talented and intelligent footballer” by former Spurs striker Gary Lineker on Twitter in March 2023.
Exciting James Maddison update for Newcastle, blow for Tottenham Hotspur
This is a really good update for Newcastle United fans, but that the Magpies are leading the race for James Maddison will come as a blow for Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham are a big club who regularly compete for the Premier League top four, but Newcastle will play in the UEFA Champions League next season and are going places under head coach Eddie Howe and club owners PIF.
Maddison is one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, and there is no surprise that Tottenham and Newcastle both want the 26-year-old.
The playmaker made 28 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham this past season.
Maddison scored 10 goals and gave nine assists in those games.
