Everton have agreed to sell Tom Cannon to Championship leaders Leicester City as Sunderland miss out on the striker.
That is according to The Athletic; early pacesetters Leicester City winning the race for a centre-forward who made such an impression during a loan spell at Preston North End in the second half of last term.
The appropriately-named Tom Cannon – an emphatic finisher inside the penalty area – will undergo a medical with the Foxes on deadline day after Everton accepted their bid of £7.5 million.
And this brings an end to Sunderland’s hopes of luring Cannon to the Stadium of Light. Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray has made no secret of his desire for a new centre-forward to replace Ross Stewart, should the Scotland international join Southampton before tonight’s transfer deadline.
Leicester City win race for Everton striker Tom Cannon
“What I would suggest is that (Stewart) can’t be getting sold,” Mowbray tells The Chronicle. “Unless the knight in shining armour comes riding through the door. I’d think and hope that would be the case.
“I’d think that we’d have a striker for the future if Ross did (leave). Truthfully, I don’t know what will happen with Ross.”

“The scenario hasn’t changed for me,” Mowbray adds. “He’s either going to be here after Friday. Or, we take a huge bid for him, and we spend all the money on strikers who are going to make the difference for us.”
Sunderland want £10 million for Stewart.
