Celtic linked winger Tete is reportedly now a free-agent after the former Leicester City and Lyon forward terminated his contract at Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
After losing Manor Solomon to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer – the Israel international moving to North London on a free-transfer, much to the frustration of Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin – it seems that history is repeating itself with another of the Donetsk club’s snake-hipped wideman.
Tete enjoyed a brief spell alongside Brendan Rodgers at Leicester, joining the King Power outfit in the January window. And reports are now suggesting that a reunion could be on the cards at Celtic.
And with Ukrainian publication SportArena reporting that Tete has jumped at the opportunity to terminate his contract at Shakhtar Donetsk – taking advantage of FIFA legislation following the Russian invasion – Celtic could potentially land a player who was valued at £25 million only a few months ago for absolutely nothing.
Rodgers could work with Tete again at Celtic
23-year-old Tete faded at Leicester after a bright start.
A tally of 14 goals or assists in 21 Ligue 1 starts at Lyon, however, is proof of how effective the twinkle-toed attacker can be when at his most confident, and Tete should find life easier in a dominant Celtic side than he did in a Leicester team who suffered relegation on the final day of 2022/23.
“(Tete is) a right-winger that can take the ball, pass the ball, look after it, make runs and work,” Rodgers beamed after the one-time Southampton target marked his Foxes bow with a dazzling display against Aston Villa in February.
“What a debut for him. He knows football. He knows the type of game we were trying to play. His touch is immaculate.

“He has a good weight of pass but can run in behind. His finish was absolutely brilliant. He loves football off the pitch and he is super professional.”
Since Tete was linked with Celtic around a fortnight ago, the Hoops completed the signing of fellow winger Yang Hyun-Jun from Korean football. As such, there is no longer such an obvious need for Tete in Rodgers’ roster; Yang and fellow new recruit Marco Tilio helping to offset the loss of Jota to Saudi Arabia.
