Brendan Rodgers has spoken highly about James Maddison and how Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signing is now ‘one of the top players’ in the Premier League.
The Celtic boss worked with James Maddison at Leicester City and he would have seen the 26-year-old develop into a player who has now returned to the England set-up after a three-year absence.
Since moving to Tottenham this summer, Maddison has set the world alight and helped new boss Ange Postecoglou make an unbeaten start by scoring two goals and supplying the same number of assists from his four Premier League games.
Brendan Rodgers touched upon how his former player ‘suits’ playing for an attacking coach, which he is getting with Postecoglou, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (06/09/23 at 9:15 am).
Of course, he got the same with Rodgers in Leicester colours, that’s why he has scored 22 goals and supplied 17 assists during the past two seasons.
Nonetheless, this is what Rodgers had to say about Maddison’s qualities as a player and his move to Tottenham.
“No, not at all (surprised by Maddison),” said Rodgers. “I think there are two aspects. One, he has really developed, James. When I first went to Leicester, he had things he had to work on, but his talent was clear.
“People who know him well, he really, really loves the game. He loves football. His personality is fantastic. But he is a top-level player, so I am absolutely delighted for him.
“Also going to Tottenham, with Ange, he is an attacking coach and James suits an attacking style. He has to have a manager that will attack the game. That will be a great fit for him.
“Tottenham as a club, it’s a club that is steeped in history of really good football, so he will fit perfectly into that. I can’t speak highly enough of him, as a young guy, he is amazing, and as a footballer, he is one of the top players in the Premier League.”

Can Maddison fire Spurs back to Europe?
One of the main reasons why Spurs haven’t missed Harry Kane is because of the impact Maddison has made.
For years, Spurs fans have been crying out for a player of his ilk, and now that the goalscoring midfielder has arrived, he is everything they hoped for.
It’s now a case of Maddison being able to maintain his performances and if he can help the team return to Europe.
