Tony Cascarino doesn’t think Newcastle United transfer target Harvey Barnes is a Champions League-quality player, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested in the Leicester City winger.
The 25-year-old is expected to leave Leicester City this summer following their relegation to the Championship – he netted 13 Premier League goals from 34 games.
But with a number of Premier League clubs keen on the all-action winger, Cascarino thinks Harvey Barnes is ‘one dimensional’ and not worthy of playing at the very top level, as he told talkSPORT.
This applies to Newcastle because they will be playing Champions League football next season and they have expressed interest in the Foxes star.
Eddie Howe is looking to bolster his squad with added quality as they enter the elite stage, with Barnes’ club teammate, James Maddison, also of interest to the Magpies.
With Spurs also looking at Barnes, his future was discussed, as Cascarino questioned where he stands in the pecking order.
“Harvey Barnes is slightly different (to Maddison) because he’s a bit one-dimensional,” said Cascarino. “But he gets good numbers.
“He wants to just go past a fullback and drive into the 18-yard box. He has a nice left foot and he likes hitting things early.
“Again, would you put him in a team that’s in the Champions League? If you are asking for Champions League money, then they have to be in Champions League teams.
“As much as I like Harvey Barnes. I don’t think he is a Champions League player, at this moment.”

Who should sign Barnes?
Is the English winger better than what Newcastle already have? The answer is probably no, but as Miguel Almiron has proved, working under Howe could take his game to the next level.
Then there is somebody like Tottenham who are in need of added quality out wide and Barnes would add that attacking bite which Ange Postecoglou now craves as he aims to change the club’s style of play.
Either way, he is worthy of a move back to the Premier League, it just depends on how much Leicester demand for the player because that might just prove to be off-putting to interested parties.
