Newcastle United star Callum Wilson admits seeing Jamie Vardy score 102 goals since turning 30 is ‘always’ encouraging. He must also ‘give credit’ to the Leicester City ace.
Vardy holds the record for the most Premier League goals scored by a player after enjoying their 30th birthday. He took the record in March 2022 after netting his 128th top-flight goal at Burnley. Of those 128, 94 of Vardy’s goals came after he turned 30 on January 11, 2017.
The 36-year-old went on to bag another five to finish the 2021/22 season and has hit three more this season. It has been more of a struggle for Vardy in 22/23 but he has scored twice in his past four outings. And Vardy’s goals continue to be a source of inspiration for Wilson.
Newcastle star Wilson pays tribute to Leicester ace Vardy’s record
Wilson has paid tribute to Vardy’s goalscoring record since turning 30 ahead of Newcastle hosting Leicester on Monday. The Foxes travel to St James’ Park with Vardy’s goals keeping them in the fight to avoid relegation. His efforts helped seal draws with Leeds and Everton.
“You have to give credit to Jamie,” Wilson has told Sky Sports. “Since turning 30 he’s scored 100 Premier League goals. That was something that definitely sprung to mind when you turn 30 and people say you could be on the decline now.
“No, people have scored 100 goals since turning 30! For me that was always a positive thing to take away from that. I’m in the scoring form of my life in the Premier League, so long may it continue.”
Vardy is having his worst Premier League season in Wilson’s best
While Vardy’s goals are keeping Leicester in the mix for Premier League survival, Wilson’s are firing Newcastle into the Champions League. The 31-year-old has scored 11 goals over his last 10 games and laid on two assists. His efforts have also taken him to 18 for the season.
It is only the third time in Wilson’s Premier League career that the forward has produced a double-digit campaign. This term is also his most prolific season yet having scored 14 with AFC Bournemouth in 2018/19 and 12 for Newcastle in 2020/21 following a £20m transfer.
Meanwhile, this season is only the second Premier League term in which Vardy has failed to hit double digits. He scored just five goals in his debut top-flight term in 2014/15 before netting 24, 13, 20, 18, 23, 15 and 15 again per campaign before hitting three this term yet.
