Don Hutchison says he wanted Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to sign Harvey Barnes from Leicester City, but he’s now impressed that he is going to join Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
The former Liverpool midfielder labelled Harvey Barnes as an ‘unbelievable’ player, who should have made the switch to Merseyside when Sadio Mane headed for the exit door, as he told ESPN.
Whilst that didn’t happen, Klopp is now pretty stacked in that department, with the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo all capable of playing that role.
But whilst Barnes won’t be plying his trade at Anfield, he will be donning the colours of Newcastle United, it has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that a deal is pretty close to being announced.
With the Magpies in the Champions League next season, they needed to beef up their squad and Barnes certainly does that.
Hutchison thinks that the 24-year-old, who scored 13 Premier League goals for relegated Leicester last season, is a ‘Champions League qualify player’, as he discussed his transfer to Newcastle.
On why Newcastle aren’t pushing for someone higher than Barnes: “Financial play comes into mind,” said Hutchison. “They have unlimited funds, but there is no point in having unlimited funds if you can’t spend.
“I think you are doing Harvey Barnes down a little bit. I think he is an unbelievable player. When Liverpool sold Sadio Mane, I was thinking ‘he could easily step up to that sort of level’, then obviously they got Diaz in.
“It’s almost like people have forgotten that Newcastle are in the Champions League because he is a Champions League player. For £38 million, that’s very, very cheap for such a brilliant player.”

Can Barnes break into the England squad?
The all-action forward has been scoring at a strong rate during the past few years, but it hasn’t resulted in him earning those caps for England.
Perhaps playing at a higher level and for a team in the Champions League will result in Gareth Southgate giving the player a chance next season.
With Euro 2024 around the corner, Barnes certainly has to talk pretty quickly and loudly, or else, he won’t get a look in.
